WATCHING BRIEFS

ARCHAEOLOGICAL WATCHING BRIEF

An archaeological watching brief is a programme of monitoring. This involves an archaeologist watching any plant machinery while breaking ground. If the archaeologist sees any archaeology they will temporarily stop the machine, and usually dig or record it on the spot. If significant archaeology such as human remains is found during a watching brief, the work may stop and a programme of further excavation implemented. This is why a thorough desk based asessment, WSI and trial trenching is important to prevent work from stopping due to previously unidentified archaeology. We work with our clients to guide them through the process and find a cost effective solution to deal with the archaeology.
