ARCHAEOLOGY

Services

The identification of archaeological remains will often entail a program of evalutaion, and discharging any archaeological planning condition. This is to assess the significance of any heritage assets or buried features. The result of an evaluation will go towards making decisions about how to proceed with any subsequent excavations, if any are needed. If a significant ammount of archaeology is known to be on the site, or discovered in the evalutaion process, there are a variety of strategies to mitigate any impact on archaeology a development may cause. We can implement a programme of preservation in situ, site monitoring known as a watching brief, change of design to not impact archaeology, and excavations.

DESK BASED ASSESSMENT

We offer desk based assessments and WSI reports. The desk based assessment will often be the intial archaeological planning requirement. The document characterises and archaeological potential and risk for a given site. It will take into account the site geology, landscape, known archaeology in the area, and previous excavation reports. A variety of data from site visits, topographic survey, GIS is collated in the report which will reccommend any mitigation strategy needed.

If a programme of archaeological fieldwork is reccommended by a planning department, the next stage will be to produce a WSI, or written scheme of investigation. This document outlines the aims and methods for a programme of archeological works. It will include maps of the site, its archaeological and historical context, number of trenches to be excavated, and type of machinery used. Once the WSI is approved, a detailed cost estimate can be produced.
